Cardiac emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time — at home, at work, or in public. Knowing CPR can mean the difference between life and death. At Second Breath CPR, we believe everyone should be equipped with the knowledge and confidence to act in an emergency. Here are 5 essential CPR tips to keep in mind.
1. Call 911 First
Before starting CPR, call 911 or have someone nearby call while you begin compressions. Emergency medical services need to be on the way as soon as possible. Every second counts.
2. Push Hard and Fast
Effective chest compressions are the cornerstone of CPR. Push down at least 2 inches on the center of the chest at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute. A helpful rhythm guide: the beat of 'Stayin' Alive' by the Bee Gees matches this pace perfectly.
3. Allow Full Chest Recoil
After each compression, let the chest fully rise back to its normal position. This allows the heart to refill with blood before the next compression. Avoid leaning on the chest between compressions.
4. Use an AED If Available
Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are found in many public places — schools, gyms, airports, and offices. If one is nearby, use it! AEDs are designed to be user-friendly and provide step-by-step voice instructions. They can dramatically increase survival rates when used quickly.
5. Get Certified — Be Ready
Reading about CPR is a great start, but hands-on training is what truly prepares you to act confidently in an emergency. At Second Breath CPR in Lancaster, CA, we offer a wide range of certification courses — from BLS for healthcare providers to Heartsaver CPR/AED for the general public. Our experienced instructors will guide you through every step.
